Around 2 million deaths per year can be attributed to physical inactivity, according to the WHO. Unfortunately, over 60% of people in the world lead a sedentary lifestyle. Now more than ever, with people working from home, movement happens a lot less through the day.

No matter your situation, movement is important, and a lot easier to add to your day than you think. In this blog post, we’ll list some quick ways you can move more in your day.

Get Out of the House

If there’s one habit I’m happy I added to my life recently, it’s walking. Going on regular walks has great benefits both physically and mentally. As well as making you move, walking is a great way to take in some sun, and disconnect. Whether you’re with your thoughts ore listening to music or a podcast, it’s always good to remove yourself from work, and get a little you time. It’s also a great way to discover parts of your city you haven’t seen before. Walking is a great habit you should add to your day.

Get Up And Stretch

We spend a lot of our time sitting. From online school and remote work, to writing this blog, reading, eating, and a lot of other things, it’s almost scary. This is even more true because of sitting’s correlation with bad health outcomes. To combat this, it’s always good to stand every hour or so, to give your body a break. Even better, try some exercises and stretches to target the muscles negatively affected by sitting. Trust me, I’ve been there, your posture will thank you.

Grease the Groove

Another fun way to move more is with a technique called grease the groove. “Greasing the groove” is a phrase Pavel Tsatsouline coined to describe what you’re doing when you consistently practice a specific strength skill. Basically, it means repeating an exercise often throughout the day, but not to failure.

Whether you’re performing 10 push-ups every time you’re about to sit, or 5 pull-ups after using the bathroom, “greasing the groove” can be an interesting way to be more active through the day.

Exercises for Desk Workers

While sitting at a desk, the bulk of the work we do is in front of our body. After long hours typing away, it’s also very hard not to find ourselves slouching, promoting bad posture. Therefore, here is a list of exercises all desk workers should add to their day.

  • Pull-ups
  • Deadlifts
  • Dead hangs
  • Scapular retractions
  • External rotation exercises

More Simple Steps

Here is a list of more things you can do to move more everyday:

  • Go inside your coffee shop instead of using the drive-through
  • Use a small glass of water, and get up to fill it often
  • Park further away so you have to walk
  • Take the stairs, not the elevator
